Registration of birth of a minor that occured outside Hungary

Introduction

The birth of a child to a Hungarian parent born outside Hungary can be registered in Hungary through the Consulate.


Who can initiate this procedure?

One of the parents  who can prove his/her Hungarian citizenship 

  1. when applying and 
  2. at the time of the child's birth

 with a valid Hungarian passport.


Documents to be submitted when applying

  • The child's original Israeli birth certificate (which includes the mother's surname and first name at birth, also known as maiden name) with Apostille authentication (this can solely be obtained from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem, NO digital or e-Apostille is accepted) and its precise Hungarian translation (Note: NO Apostille/notary legalization is needed on the translation itself)
  • Electronically filled-out and printed application form (to be filled out in Hungarian in full, correctly, but not signed!)
  • Hungarian citizen parent’s original Hungarian documents issued by the Hungarian authorities:
      1. Birth certificate 
      2. Marriage certificate 
      3. LIG „address card”/a document indicating his/her identification number  
      4. Hungarian passport 
          1. valid at the time of child’s birth and
          2. when applying
  • Both parents and child: valid Israeli passports

IMPORTANT NOTES:

You need to contact the consular officer at consinfo.tlv@mfa.gov.hu  for further clarification in advance if any of the below cases apply to you:

  • The child was born to unmarried parents
  • The child’s name changed since his/her birth
  • Your/your spouse’s names in Israel differ from the names indicated in your Hungarian documents issued be the Hungarian authorities
  • The Hungarian citizen parent has a registered address in Hungary

Method of submission:

  1. The application must be submitted in person after a prior appointment
  2. No fast track procedure or emergency appointments are available
  3. Appointments cannot be booked by phone or e-mail, only online
  4. The joint presence of both parents is required when applying – children do not need to be present
  5. The number of appointments booked must match the number of children whose births you wish to register

Duration of procedure

4-6 months.
