IDENTITY CARD – FIRST/RENEWAL (same process)

It is possible to request an identity card (e-SZIG) with an electronic storage element at the Consulate. In addition to personal identification, the card proves Hungarian citizenship and can be used for travel between the member states of the European Union. The electronic storage element of the document contains the citizen's fingerprint, photograph and signature.

Who can initiate this procedure? 

Hungarian citizens only - who have already been issued a Hungarian identification number or a LIG ”address card”.

IMPORTANT: ID cards can be renewed 60 days prior to their date of expiry. 


Submission method:

The application has to be submitted in person after prior appointment. For information on booking an appointment, please see our "General Information - appointments" page.


Documents to be submitted when applying

ALL APPLICANTS:

A passport photo not older than 1 month with the following requirements:

  • Passport photo size – 35X45 mm –  with white background only
  • The face must be in focus, have good contrast and accurately reflect the person’s skin tone
  • Eyes opened looking straight at the camera, mouth closed, visible ears, no glasses/hats
  • The photo must contain the applicant only (no objects, other person’s  body parts etc. can appear in the photo)
     

 APPLICANTS - AGED 14+

Only the applicant must be present (parents’ presence is not necessary) 

  1. The Hungarian ID card (except when applying for the first time)
  2. Valid Hungarian and Israeli passports 
  3. Hungarian LIG  ”address card” / a document indicating his/her identification number  issued by the Hungarian authorities

​APPLICANTS – AGED 6-13

Joint presence of the minor and both parents is required

  1. The original Hungarian documents issued by the Hungarian authorities:
    1. Child’s Hungarian ID card (except when applying for the first time)
    2. Child’s valid Hungarian passport
    3. Child’s LIG ”address card” / a document indicating his/her identification number 
    4. Child’s birth certificate 
    5. Parents’  marriage certificate 
    6. A valid Hungarian passport (of the Hungarian citizen parent)
  1. A valid Israeli passport  (of the minor and the non-Hungarian citizen parent)

APPLICANTS - AGED 0-5

One of the parents must be present only - the child does not have to be present

Method of submisson

  • The application must be submitted in person, after a prior appointment.
  • No fast track procedure or emergency appointments are available
  • Appointments cannot be booked by phone or e-mail, only online

LOST/STOLEN ID card

In case your Hungarian identity card has been stolen or lost, it must immediately be reported to the Hungarian authorities in order to prevent its misuse. Please contact consinfo.tlv@mfa.gov.hu

A new ID card can be applied with the same requirements as indicated above.
