1. Change your birth name
Changing your birth name means changing your last name and / or first name. Every Hungarian citizen has the option to do this. There are two possible cases: changing from a Hungarian name to a Hungarian name, or from a Hungarian name to a foreign-sounding name.
Israeli name changes are not accepted automatically in Hungarian law, the client must initiate a name change procedure.

The application has to be submitted in person after prior appointment. For information on booking an appointment, please see our "General Information - appointments" page.
Documents required to submit the application:
- Datasheet (downloadable at the bottom of the page)
- Original Hungarian birth certificate
- Valid passport or identity card.
The procedure fee can be found in the “Consular Fees” section of the website. If this is not the first time the name has been changed, the procedure fee will be higher.

1., B) Changing your birth name from a Hungarian name to a foreign-sounding name

According to the law, a foreign-sounding name is only allowed in circumstances where the client deserves extraordinary consideration. Thus, for example, the mere fact that it is easier to live with a Hebrew-sounding name in Israel is not enough. We therefore recommend that you always inquire in advance at the Office of Immigration and Nationality about the possibility of changing your name.
