Introduction

Any registration of a Hungarian citizen's marriage abroad in Hungary can be done at the Consulate.


 

Who can apply for the procedure?

The condition for submitting the application is that one of the parties (spouse) can prove his / her Hungarian citizenship both at the time of the marriage and the submission of the application.

If you cannot prove it, then the registration must be started together with citizenship verification process.


 

Documents to be submitted

  • Original Israeli marriage certificate with Apostille authentication (this can solely be obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel in Jerusalem), and its precise Hungarian translation. Apostille or notarial certification is not required for the translation itself). The certificate must contain a settlement as the place of ceremony. 
  • Hungarian original birth certificate and Hungarian address card of the Hungarian citizen spouse and copies thereof
  • Electronically completed and printed, but not signed application form
  • Proof of the identity and Hungarian citizenship of the Hungarian spouse: an original Hungarian passport or identity card or naturalisation document and their copies.
  • Proof of citizenship and identity of the non-Hungarian spouse: a valid Israeli passport and its copy.
  • Proof of divorce or widow's marital status prior to the current marriage:
  • Hungarian citizen's original Hungarian marriage certificate with the relevant data and its copy
  • Foreign Israeli citizen’s original Israeli divorce certificate with Apostille certification and its precise Hungarian translation (In case the birth certificate is already bilingual – English-Hebrew, no translation is required. Apostille or notarial certification is not required for the translation itself).

 

Method of submission

The application has to be submitted in person after prior appointment. For information on booking an appointment, please see our "General Information - appointments" page.

The joint presence of both parties (spouse) is required when applying for the procedure.


 

Duration of procedure

It is usually 3-4 months, but it can take up to 6-8 months. There is no possibility of expediting the process.


 

Fees

The service is free of charge.


 

Other important information

Before making an appointment, please inform the consular officer if any of the following apply to you:

  • If the Hungarian citizen divorced before his or her current marriage, but did not register it in Hungary, the divorce must also be initiated within the framework of the “Registration of divorce” procedure, also by making an appointment immediately after the marriage is registered. If the previous marriage has not been registered in Hungary either, it must also be registered in the “Registration of a marriage” procedure (also by making an appointment immediately after the registration of the marriage).
  • if the spouse has changed his / her birth surname and / or first time (the spouse's birth name differs from the Hungarian birth certificate at the time of application, or the foreign national's spouse's birth name differs from the Israeli marriage certificate), then it is necessary to request its change in Hungary:
  • In the case of a Hungarian citizen: within the framework of the procedure “for the transfer of a change of birth surname and / or first name abroad”, also by appointment, immediately after the registration of the marriage.
  • In the case of a foreign spouse, it is sufficient to submit the following document: Original Israeli name change certificate with Apostille authentication (this can solely be obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel in Jerusalem), and its precise Hungarian translation. (In case the birth certificate is already bilingual – English-Hebrew, no translation is required. Apostille or notarial certification is not required for the translation itself)
  • if the marital name currently worn by any spouse differs from the one on the Israeli marriage certificate, the following document must also be submitted: Original Israeli name change certificate with Apostille authentication, and its precise Hungarian translation. (In case the birth certificate is already bilingual – English-Hebrew, no translation is required. Apostille or notarial certification is not required for the translation itself)
